The Men’s Probus Club of Birchington & District is an opportunity for retired men to meet up monthly for lunch and fellowship. It was founded in 1977 and we currently have 41 active members, 6 Life members and one Honorary Member (Sir Roger Gale MP). We meet at the Smugglers restaurant in Birchington on the last Thursday of the month and occasionally throughout the year we have a speaker
The highlight this autumn was when we hosted the ‘2016 Joint Probus Clubs of East Kent lunch’ at the Smugglers on Thursday 27th October. Around 60 Probians from Broadstairs, Canterbury, Deal, Herne Bay and Ramsgate as well as members of the Birchington Club enjoyed a two course meal. This annual event was an excellent opportunity to share gossip and ideas with members from other clubs.
The highlight of the lunch was a short presentation by representatives from the Broadstairs Town Shed project. Project coordinator Claire Shelton and volunteer David Seal gave a brief overview of this initiative, which started in the Australian outback and has grown to have representation across the world, whose aim is to provide retired men and women the chance to reconnect with their practical skills post-retirement. From a small nucleus of members the Broadstairs group now has well over 100 members who can attend weekly meetings at which they do woodworking and enjoy the chance to chat and reminisce with fellow retirees.
We are a friendly and informal group, so if you are new to the area or are looking for new friends and contacts do please get in touch. A warm welcome awaits you.
