40th Anniversary Lunch of the Probus Club of Birchington & District

Members and guests eagerly awaiting the food

The Probus Club of Birchington & District was founded in March 1977 so at our lunch this year on 30th March we were pleased to celebrate our 40th anniversary. To mark the occasion we invited the other local clubs to join us and were pleased that the Probus Clubs of Broadstairs, Deal Herne Bay and Ramsgate sent representatives. We all enjoyed a low calorie snack of roast beef followed by jam roly poly. As well as recognising our landmark, this was a good chance to meet up with Probus members from other clubs.

Following an excellent meal, President Alan Harris welcomed members and guests and invited James Croall, President of the Rotary Club of Westgate & Birchington, to say a few words. He congratulated the Club on their ‘staying power’ and reflected on the fact that the Probus Club was created by the Rotary Club as at that time Rotarians could not remain members once they had retired. It was decided there was a need for retired men to meet in friendship and fellowship and ‘hey presto!’ we are still here four decades later J President Alan then invited each of the four visiting Presidents to say a few words and we finished with a toast to ‘The Next Forty Years’!

The Club would welcome new members and if you are interested please contact me at dave.alker@btinternet.com or call 01843 845783
