Who are Rotarians and what do they do?
Men and women of all ages, sharing their time, energy and skills to help charities and good causes in the communities in which they live. Our club enjoys excellent fellowship, participates in a wide variety of fund-raising projects, supports civic and community events, and holds many interesting and fun social activities.
We meet on Tuesday evenings at 6:00pm, at St Augustine's, Westgate-on-Sea
Why not come along to one of our meetings and see what we do?

Rotary began in Chicago in 1905, when lawyer Paul P Harris and three friends met, effectively forming the first Rotary club. Since then, Rotary has grown into an international organisation with more than 1.2 million members - known as Rotarians - in 34,000 Rotary clubs in 200 countries. Rotary International forms a global network of business, professional and community leaders who volunteer their time and talents to serve communities locally and around the world and form strong, lasting friendships in the process. The Rotary motto is `Service before Self’.
Our local club – Westgate and Birchington - was founded in 1971, the order of the names being decided by the toss of a coin by the founding members! Currently, the Club has 18 members from a wide range of professional and business activities. The club meets weekly on a Tuesday evening at 6.30pm at St Augustine’s on Canterbury Rd and has mainly local speakers covering a wide range of topics.
We give a very high priority to supporting our local charities and arrange fund raising events throughout the year to this end – you have probably seen Father Christmas on his Sleigh and street collectors with the Rotary emblem in December as one example. We have supported such organisations as The Pilgrims’ Hospice, the RNLI, Demelza House, Sing for Your Life, The Foreland School, Kids Out, Martha’s Trust, The Alfie Gough Trust and many others, raising money and contributing resources. In a recent project, our Club helped clear an overgrown garden in Birchington for someone who was unable to do that themselves
We also support Rotary’s international charity, Foundation, which has played a major role in the campaign to eradicate Polio worldwide. We send Shelter Boxes and Aqua Boxes to areas suffering disasters. We know that the help we send to these areas via Foundation reaches its intended destination because local Rotary Clubs on the spot are involved in administering it.
In Rotary, we form great friendships and help our community in many practical ways. If you want to know more, please contact me –Dave Alker
